Legal Risk and Human Handoff
Legal Risk and Human Handoff
The structure-only firewall for legal information systems and engineering teams.

Scope and honesty note
Jurisdiction: United States structural overview; as of 2026-08-28; jurisdictions vary; not legal advice. This lesson renders source and process structure, refuses interpretation, cites, abstains, and hands off.
See the essential structure first
The first path makes cite, bounded structure, abstention, and human handoff visible without exposing every internal gate. This deliberately incomplete preview has 5 nodes; exceptions and legal consequences remain in the sourced prose below.

Legal information is not legal advice
Legal risk depends on jurisdiction, current law, complete facts, procedure, remedies, and professional judgment. A structural lesson can expose sources and process fields, but it must not convert incomplete inputs into a user-specific answer or predicted outcome.
Competence is a professional duty
North Carolina's adopted professional-conduct rule supplies a jurisdiction-specific competence anchor. It governs lawyers there; the engineering lesson uses it to explain why source-backed human review matters. Verbatim official-source text: “A lawyer shall not handle a legal matter that the lawyer knows or should know he or she is not competent to handle without associating with a lawyer who is competent to handle the matter. Competent representation requires the legal knowledge, skill, thoroughness, and preparation reasonably necessary for the representation.” Source: N.C. R. Prof. Conduct 1.1; https://www.ncbar.gov/for-lawyers/ethics-and-governing-rules/rules-of-professional-conduct/10-119-client-lawyer-relationship/11-competence/; retrieved 2026-08-28; official-source fixture (not neochart).
Unauthorized-practice boundary
A second North Carolina rule bars practice that violates professional regulation and bars lawyers from assisting unauthorized practice. It does not itself classify every software feature or nonlawyer act. Verbatim official-source text: “(a) A lawyer shall not practice law in a jurisdiction where doing so violates the regulation of the legal profession in that jurisdiction. (f) A lawyer shall not assist another person in the unauthorized practice of law.” Source: N.C. R. Prof. Conduct 5.5(a), (f); https://www.ncbar.gov/for-lawyers/ethics-and-governing-rules/rules-of-professional-conduct/51-57-law-firms-and-associations/55-unauthorized-practice-of-law/; retrieved 2026-08-28; official-source fixture (not neochart).
The operating doctrine
The book follows this sequence: render structure, refuse interpretation, cite, abstain, and hand off. A missing, stale, conflicting, or out-of-scope source triggers abstention rather than guesswork.
An engineering boundary
Software may show a statute citation, quoted fixture text, a filing-stage label, and missing scope fields. It should not select a forum, declare a claim valid, compute a person's legal exposure, or recommend strategy from that record.
Read the firewall workflow
The workflow has 7 nodes and 2 decision gates. Only a bounded structure output reaches the informational terminal; advice or unsupported paths route to abstention and handoff.

RENDER STRUCTURE · REFUSE INTERPRETATION · CITE · ABSTAIN · HAND-OFF: render structure, refuse interpretation, cite provenance, abstain when unsupported, and hand off to human review.
Narrow summary
The safe engineering output is sourced structure plus explicit uncertainty and a review path, never an improvised legal conclusion.
