Even parity fills the check positions from overlapping groups.

The check bits live in positions 1, 2, and 4. They are not extra data.

The first parity group
The first parity row watches positions 1, 3, 5, and 7. Even parity makes its check bit 0.
The other checks overlap
The second parity bit becomes 1, and the fourth parity bit becomes 0. The groups overlap on purpose.
