Begin with evidence doctrine
The federal sequence matters. First ask whether the item has any tendency to make a consequential fact more or less probable. Second apply the general-admissibility rule and every other applicable constitutional, statutory, and rule-based limit. Third, for relevant evidence, compare probative value with the enumerated dangers under the substantial-outweighing standard. The rule targets unfair prejudice, not all harmful force, and does not authorize exclusion merely because an item is powerful.
Relevance
The relevance rule requires a tendency to change probability and a fact of consequence. official-source fixture (not neochart). Verbatim selected rule text: “Evidence is relevant if: it has any tendency to make a fact more or less probable than it would be without the evidence; and the fact is of consequence in determining the action.” Source: Fed. R. Evid. 104, 201, 301, 401-405, 501, 601-611, 702, 801-804, 901, 1001-1004; https://www.uscourts.gov/sites/default/files/document/federal-rules-of-evidence.pdf.
General admissibility
The general-admissibility rule admits relevant evidence subject to constitutional, statutory, rule-based, and Supreme Court rule constraints, and excludes irrelevant evidence. official-source fixture (not neochart). Verbatim selected rule text: “Relevant evidence is admissible unless any of the following provides otherwise: the United States Constitution; a federal statute; these rules; or other rules prescribed by the Supreme Court. Irrelevant evidence is not admissible.” Source: Fed. R. Evid. 104, 201, 301, 401-405, 501, 601-611, 702, 801-804, 901, 1001-1004; https://www.uscourts.gov/sites/default/files/document/federal-rules-of-evidence.pdf.
Balancing
The balancing rule uses substantial-outweighing language and enumerated dangers. official-source fixture (not neochart). Verbatim selected rule text: “The court may exclude relevant evidence if its probative value is substantially outweighed by a danger of one or more of the following: unfair prejudice, confusing the issues, misleading the jury, undue delay, wasting time, or needlessly presenting cumulative evidence.” Source: Fed. R. Evid. 104, 201, 301, 401-405, 501, 601-611, 702, 801-804, 901, 1001-1004; https://www.uscourts.gov/sites/default/files/document/federal-rules-of-evidence.pdf.
Pin the synthetic evidence record
A synthetic graphic image and a less inflammatory diagram are offered for the same disputed geometry proposition. Injury is undisputed, while position, necessity, alternatives, cumulative proof, and limiting options are populated.
Work the admissibility application
The image has a stated geometry purpose, so the trace tests relevance before any balancing. It then checks other exclusion rules. Only then does it compare incremental probative value to unfair-prejudice, confusion, misleading, delay, waste, and cumulative dangers, considering the alternative diagram without turning availability of an alternative into an automatic result.
Read the populated evidence record
The relevance table contains item, proponent, purpose, consequential fact, probability tendency, other-law gate, probative value explanation, each listed danger, substantial-outweighing question, alternative proof, redaction, limiting instruction, ruling, and preserved objection. The record contains 14 populated rows.

Photo: A graphic accident image depicts an undisputed injury and disputed vehicle position. Alternative: A cropped and labeled diagram shows vehicle position without injury detail. Purpose: Proponent offers the image for impact geometry; opponent identifies unfair-prejudice and cumulative concerns. Admissibility trace: Purpose, rule, foundation, objection, response, ruling, and limitation. Relevance first: Identify consequential proposition and any tendency to make it more or less probable. Admissibility second: Check Constitution, statute, evidence rules, and other Supreme Court rules. Balancing third: Probative value versus danger of unfair prejudice, confusion, misleading, delay, waste, or needless cumulation; danger must substantially outweigh. Controls: Alternative proof, redaction, stipulation, limiting instruction, sequence, and scope may affect but do not automate the ruling.
Narrow summary
Apply relevance, general admissibility, and balancing in that order, using unfair prejudice and substantial outweighing rather than generic harm.
